Energy Star to Raise Gas Water Heater Criteria - Green Building ...

This fall, the Energy Star program will increase its minimum energy factor (EF) for water heaters gas storage from 0.62 to 0.67.

Higher standards will take effect on 1 September. Water heaters that meet the increased offer up to 14% greater savings in gas consumption compared to a conventional gas model. Calculations of Energy Star, 0.67 EF consume approximately 224 therms per year. Gas storage heaters with EF .62 consume approximately 242 therms per year, saving up to 7.3 percent higher than a conventional model.

Energy Star strives to maintain its standards of products concerned by the pace of changing technologies on the market, "said Steve Ryan, program coordinator of the EPA-administered. "Hot-water storage are becoming more efficient, and this change recognizes that fact.
