Santa Cruz plans to extend foam ban to packing peanuts, ice chests, toys

SANTA CRUZ - The city is pursuing what is considered to be the broadest ban of polystyrene foam in the state, one that would reach beyond to-go containers to cover packing peanuts, ice chests and children's toys.

Santa Cruz has banned foam food cartons since 2008, a step taken by dozens of other California cities in recent years. But the proposed expansion calls for all retailers to stop selling, renting or distributing a much wider array of foam products - including prepackaged plates, bowls, drinking cups, packing materials and toys - to further decrease litter, support renewable resources and reduce marine pollution.
