Leotards and gymnastics uniforms

Bula Vinaka readers. Today as I write from the beautiful and quaint town of Sigatoka, we'll be talking about leotards and what your child can wear when attending gymnastics practice in general.

Buying one's very first leotard can be a very exciting occasion for a little girl. Mine was bought on a family Saturday morning shopping excursion. It was unplanned really. We went into a department store, in retrospect it could very well have been a sports shop. But the only thing I can recall about that day was spotting the striking orange leotard on display and falling in love with it. So my parents bought the leotard for me. Before then I wore tights and t-shirts to gym practice and only wore the school leotards to competitions. In the years I practiced gymnastics I never felt the need to buy another leotard, even though I knew that when you start getting 'wedgies' more often than the usual discomfort and the sleeves of your long sleeved leotard start riding up half way between your wrist and elbow - it's time to get a new leotard. Sometimes I would even wear a combination of the leotard outside my leggings and plimsoles for PE. I was in denial I guess. But instead of getting a new leotard I got a shiny red exercise jumpsuit which gradually grew on me.

I've just read an interesting article on the return of Alicia Sacramone (read article here). For those of you not familiar with Alicia, she was a member of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team in 2008. It seems she decided to get out of "retirement" and begin to work for 2012 ... Good luck Alicia.

Now the task of leotards for gymnastics. If you have a daughter who takes classes in gymnastics, or is a competitive gymnast you know that the key to a successful session of gymnastics is the variety.Yes, working a variety of gymnastics skills is good to help build skills gymnasts together, but more importantly, your little gymnast must have a variety of shirts. This is the main difference between boys and girls in most aspects of life. The boys have their favorite pair of shorts, shirt or workout lucky, and that is what they have to bring to the practice ... no doubt about it. However, girls need an assortment of styles and colors in their wardrobe, and their gym suits and accessories are absolutely no different.
