The tattered building with peeling paint, cracking asphalt makes 118 W. Vermijo St. look empty — a vestige of a down economy and failed businesses.

On closer examination, a different picture of this warehouse, a stone’s throw from Interstate 25, begins to paint itself. Partially hidden by rusty security bars, a small cardboard sign appears.

“High Plains Artists” is the message conveniently accompanied by a colorful image of a painter’s palette.

“Studios should look like a warehouse,” said Tammy Rienstra, one of eight artists who come to the worn building every Monday to hone their craft, or simply share stories and laughs.
