Alternatively, DD-WRT has become an out-of-the-box option for many common routers, but there are also stand-alone implementations that can be placed on the routers that support it. DD-WRT has a slightly convoluted history.In 2002, Linksys has begun to release a range of router WRT54G line, which used Linux as an embedded system. The company was finally forced to release the source code for these routers under the terms of the GPL.
