Now trust me, none of that is a knock against Thrice. It’s just that thinking of the Orange County band brings back a flood of memories for us suburban kids of a slightly alt-bent unlucky enough to grow up in the land of drive-throughs, Best Buys, strip centers and well-maintained lawns. For us, bands like Thrice offered a sort of release. They were hardcore enough for the real punks to begrudgingly like them (whether they admitted it or not), and just pretty enough to be successful in the mainstream. But whereas their So-Cal, swooped-bangs brethren were content to play a few festivals and sell some records, Thrice always seemed a bit more authentic and artistically ambitious.
